True Magic Puppies

Picture
We have a limited number of litters a year preferring to focus on quality in lieu of quantity.  All potential buyers are asked to complete a ‘puppy questionnaire’ in an effort to ensure all buyers offer the type of home environment that is conducive to puppies (and Goldens, specifically).  If the puppy questionnaire is accepted, a personal interview time will be established to meet us and see our home where both parties are given the opportunity to ask questions.

If all looks good at that point, the potential buyer's name would be added to the waiting list for a puppy at the next breeding.  In order to secure a spot on the waiting list, it's advisable to provide  a refundable deposit (refundable up until the puppy is born). Puppies are ‘placed’ based on the date deposits are received, i.e. -“first deposit received = first puppy placed”.

Before going home at eight (8) weeks of age, puppies will be wormed four (4) times, have their first shot, and have a wellness visit to the vet.  Included with the puppy is a complete health record, a puppy packet with instructions on housebreaking, crate training, clipping nails, poisonous plants, etc., and their AKC registration. Depending on the interest and availability of the new puppy owners, puppy classes will be held if 50% of the litter can attend.

A basic puppy contract must be completed by all buyers at the time of the deposit. The contract requires that if for any reason you are unable to keep your puppy, he/she is returned, no questions asked.  The contract also requires that the owners wait to spay/neuter their puppy. Significant research has been done that shows early spay/neuter can negatively impact the health of the puppy. From the possibility of impacting the development of hip dysplasia to the potential of increasing the risk of cancer, puppies can not be spay/neutered until at least 1 1/2 years of age (2 heat cycles for females). Goldens, all dogs for that matter, need an opportunity to mature both physically and mentally. Early spay/neutering does not allow for increased muscle mass, appropriate bone development and mentally appropriate behavior. The puppy contract also restricts the owners from showing or breeding their puppy. If the owner is interested in either, please let me know and we can discuss that possibility.

Typically, puppy classes are scheduled over the next several weeks once the puppies go home, depending on the weather conditions.  At that time, the puppies will get their remaining two (2) parvo-distemper shots, have a chance to socialize with their litter-mates, owners can ask questions and address any issues they may be having at home and we'll start on some basic obedience training.  We realize everyone has different levels of experience with dogs and/or puppies so it's important to us to provide support and answer any questions owners may have. Besides, it's so much fun to watch the puppies interact with their litter-mates after they haven't seen in a while.

During the eight (8) weeks that we care for the puppies, we introduce them to a number of stimulant in an effort to initiate the socialization process.  We begin with the Early Neurological Stimulation exercises as identified by Dr. Carmen L. Battaglia.  The introduction of stimuli continues throughout their early developmental stage to include  items for them to crawl on, under and over, various textures/surfaces to walk on, different noises are introduced, items are placed hanging over and on the whelping box and an indoor and outdoor play area is set up.

Once they are old enough, we encourage visitors from all walks of life to visit, all the while ensuring we are maintaining a safe and nurturing environment. Our goal, and that of the new owners should be, to introduce the puppies to 100 people in 100 days. Once they have their third shot, they can go anywhere you go, except dog parks, or on very long walks, or jumping, doing agility, or.....We'll discuss the list later with owners.  Remember, they are still babies when they go home and need time to develop and grow properly

What Our Puppy Owners Are Saying:

"I got my Sophie from True Magic in 2015 and could not ask for a more loving and sweet dog.  She brings such joy to our family.  Karen is a wonderful breeder and a true dog lover.  She cares about both the puppies she breeds and their mothers. The mothers are not just dogs to be bred but are her fur babies and members of her family. The puppies bred at True Magic are treated with such care and love by Karen and her family from the day they are born until the day they are handed over to their forever families. Join the Facebook page as it provides information and updates on issues golden retriever parents should be aware of  (and cute pictures of her dogs and dogs from their litters).  I highly recommend getting your dog from True Magic"
